Graham Watson - Liberal Democrat MEP for South-West England and Gibraltar

Comment on Ming Campbell's resignation

9.06.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 15th Oct 2007

Commenting on tonight's decision by Ming Campbell to resign as Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Graham Watson, Leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament and MEP for the South West and Gibraltar said:

"Sir Menzies Campbell served the Party honourably and to the best of his ability and I regret his decision to resign. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, "to lose one leader is unfortunate, to lose two looks like carelessness." I hope that my Westminster colleagues will find it in themselves to unite behind the Party's next leader."
