MEP calls on EU to clean up its act on Gibraltar Bay Pollution

5.47.21pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 28th Aug 2007

Graham Watson, Lib Dem MEP for Gibraltar, has tabled a Parliamentary Question calling on the European Commission to act to improve conditions for those residing around the Campo de Gibraltar.

Commenting from Brussels Graham Watson said:

"From contact I have had with constituents of mine on the Rock I am aware of the real concerns which exist about bay pollution caused by human activity in and around Gibraltar. I want the European Commission to act to ensure that we monitor this closely, in particular for those living near polluting installations. I have asked the Commission to step up to the challenge in ensuring EU directives which could make a real difference are fully upheld."

In November 2002 the Gibraltar Environmental Safety Group lodged a complaint with the European Commission regarding bay pollution in Gibraltar. The GESG's study centres on the Cadiz province, which has the highest mortality rate in all of the Iberian Peninsula.
