Alan Johnston's release brings ray of hope to Middle East10.49.35am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 4th Jul 2007 Commenting on today's release of Alan Johnston from 114 days of captivity in the Middle East, Graham Watson MEP, Liberal & Democrat group leader in the European Parliament said: "Amongst all the tragedy that is so often the reality in the Middle East, today's news comes as a ray of hope that basic humanitarian instincts can overcome ancient rivalry and bitterness. "Alan's release is clearly a huge relief to all those who have dared hope for a positive outcome. "I hope to see further moves in the weeks ahead for the release of Israeli prisoners held by militant groups in Gaza in parallel to the release of Palestinian political prisoners from the Israeli side. Liz Lynne MEP, Member of the European Parliament's Human Rights Committee and co-author of a European Parliamentary resolution in April 2007 for the release of Alan Johnston, has also expressed her delight and relief at his release. Liz, a long time campaigner for the rights of the Palestinian people, said: "This is obviously great news for Alan's family and friends and all those who have campaigned for his release." "Let us hope that this is the start of a new phase in the Middle-East and will persuade the European Union and other international bodies to start talking to Hamas, because only through dialogue can we achieve a long-lasting peace"
